Current position: Dr. Stephen A. (“Ash”) Bullard is an Associate Professor in the School of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences (SFAAS).

Education: He earned his MSc and PhD degrees at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. Robin M. Overstreet, with a focus in marine science and aquatic animal health, and he was hired at Auburn in 2008.

 

Other positions/involvements: He is the President of the Southeastern Society of Parasitologists, serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Parasitology, is jointly appointed to the faculty of the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (University of South Alabama), Middle Tennessee State University, and Auburn University’s Department of Biological Sciences. He serves as a reviewer for dozens of international scientific journals and federal and state granting agencies.

Research & Teaching: His research at Auburn focuses on Parasitology of freshwater and marine vertebrates and invertebrates, systematics and taxonomy, ecosystem science, disease diagnostics, and aquatic animal health. He is a liaison for Auburn University’s efforts pertaining to the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He has received research grants from NOAA, SeaGrant, NSF, USDA, Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, and Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and his research has been published in 2 books and 23 national and international peer-reviewed journals (comprising 74 publications). He also works with state agencies, industry, and the private sector in diagnosing abnormalities and diseases of wild and captive aquatic vertebrates and invertebrates. He has advised 2 PhD students, 4 MSc, and 14 undergraduate research interns and instructs several courses in fish biology and biodiversity, parasitology, and aquatic animal health in Auburn and on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. This is his 3rd research stay in Vietnam, including one visit to Nha Trang in 2007 and another visit to Can Tho University in 2012.
